I was a digital media content creator for a junior production of Once on this Island several years ago. My primary job was to create flyers for the production and photograph vital moments of the show during rehearsals to advertise the musical on social media. After wrapping the production, I took a costuming course through my college. Although I had never picked up a sewing needle in my life, I chose to take it to better understand the role that different creative departments play in the creation of a theatrical show. I had such a fantastic experience working on Once on This Island that I dedicated my final assignment in the course to the show, using the actors and my experiences on set as reference. For the next five weeks, I worked on creating a costume bible for an alternative version of the show and exceeded the expectation of the assignment by making two different pieces rather than just one. Although I don’t plan on pursuing a professional role in costuming, I added the costume bible to my portfolio to demonstrate my ability to learn quickly and pivot easily.
